After the wail fell upon the ears of the city the wind flew away and the sea turned to glass, a final tacit moment settled the trees. The grown-ups stopped living and nobody died but sat near the window or stood on the walk as tally marks filled the chambers of their hearts. The children heard the siren and left their play and dashed past the church to the edge of town where old Mr. Mack with the whirligig eyes picked up a ball of petrified hedgehog and played them toccatas on its spines like a jaw-harp:   a three-minute dance where nobody frowned.

First of December. I am not ready for Yule.  My thoughts and wits are scattered about like so many legos in a darkened room, just waiting to be stepped on. I.e, ARGH, I just remembered that I was going to order this thing for this person who lives across the ocean and now it's too late because I forgot! Or, GEEZ, I forgot again to deposit that check, now how am I supposed to pay for ____? And, OOPS, there's not a teacup's chance over the San Andreas fault that I'm going to get this afghan knitted in time to wrap it up and stick it under the tree.
